Lord Thane Just wanted to chime in on scaled protection based on troop loss, as I’ve commented on this before but it didn’t seem to gain any traction. Back in the before times when the only way to gain protection was from losing a defend there were a couple of very toxic behaviors that caused quite a bit of angry discourse over how to change the game to make it more fair:
1) Army killing - to take down a large kingdom you would often see a train of 5,6,7…even up to 10 kingdoms all send like 50% of their troops to slowly wreck the larger kingdoms army before you finally break them. This was done intentionally to give the attacking kingdoms a chance to defend, while also making it next to impossible for the larger kingdom to recover and be able to retal.
2.) If a failed defend was caught early enough it was entirely possible to pull off a double pre before the eventual retal at the 23 hour mark. You would regularly see the initial pre happen the same tick as the initial attack if it happened with enough time left before the tick, or within the next 1-2 ticks. If successful, then the kingdom who made the initial attack would get 20 hours of pro, leaving a 1-3 tick window of time to pull off a second pre before the retal.
As you can imagine, both of these scenarios were devastating to the kingdom on the receiving end. After much bickering back and forth, it was finally decided by Gen Shadow to institute a rule change that would grant a smaller window of protection to any kingdom on the defending side that lost more than a certain percentage of their troops…I don’t remember the specific details, but it was something like if you lost more than 60%-70% on successful defends then you were granted 9-12 hours of pro. This protection range also made it more challenging to know when that kingdom would be OOP again.
This was by no means a perfect solution to the problems, but it was definitely a step in the right direction. Overall I do think having protection is a necessary part of the game, but it feels like it all needs to be scaled to be representative of the damage done….having everyone in constant 24 hour protection seems unnecessary and slows the game down, and also makes it too predictable when a kingdom will be OOP for the next hit, but having varying levels of protection that are scaled to the total damage would still provide time for kingdoms to recover, while also making it harder to track the exact moment you can attack them again.
