I am at 84k, this guy was at 166k when he hit me, not a retal. Have fun! This makes me think should be a sliding scale for hitting down. The higher your KS gets, the closer to your KS you have to hit. This scale should increase with the top KS kingdoms in the game. There is no way I survive this attack, and in my opinion this shouldn't be allowed to happen.

I am not a fan of the smaller player losing everything most every hit. but meh, up to the admins to make some adjustments to make it a bit more equitable.

On the other hand, it does stink to be top 10 and be so big there is no one to hit.

Not sure not to balance that. Admins have a tough one there.

bierlym absolutely, If there is ever intention to increase the player base. I think the way it stands this will significantly reduce new players who stay. All it takes is one bs hit like this to make someone be done with the game forever.

Ok picture this scenario; this guy has been doing this the whole round, then when he saw I posted the attack and knew the devs would probable check the stat lines so he "had" to report it! oh man the unbelievable lengths someone will go to cheat during a TEST round. If this were true that is... What would the devs see if they looked at every one of your attacks there davao?

I think we should allow big kingdoms to hit smaller ones, just encourage them not to via huge buffs to the defender and huge reduction in spoils and huge increase in casualties for the attacker.

To me it'd be like the 300 spartans type scenario, the smaller kingdom's troops fight harder against the bully kingdom, so maybe cranking attacker casualties up 300%, make so they can't take castles - only land, reduce land spoils by -50%, increase defenders defense +300%, reduce defenders casualties -50%.

Lord Thane These are all great ideas. No matter what it is, it has to be potent enough to discourage getting completely wrecked to keep players from leaving after a single hit.

MithicYort that's why I keep saying my idea about casualty caps. Phased casualty caps specifically for each phase of battle... I solved this problem a week ago, people didn't like it, yet a week later still having people complain about getting wrecked in battles.

So idk what ppl want, do we nerf ranged units, or bring back my phased casualty caps idea, or leave it to preserve the way Thard was meant to be, or do something else?

I tried to fix it before it was a real problem, and I thought it was a sweet fix. Maybe we should put this up to a vote. Unless someone has another idea?

A casualty cap isn’t a bad idea—it encourages strategic retreats. Why would I order my general to fight to the last man during an attack, especially when I have lands back home that still need defending? The same logic applies to defense: why sacrifice every soldier holding a castle when we could abandon it, regroup, and prepare for a counterattack?

When we get to balancing races, this concept could be an interesting pro/con mechanic. For example, Orcish troops might be less likely to retreat during attacks. This would lead to higher casualty rates, but in exchange, they could receive bonuses to short-range attacks. Just as an example lol.

Lord Thane I think I might have joined late enough I never got to experience the version you mentioned. The saving grace for me here is that there is honor among the community that has made him pay 🙂 I think a vote is an excellent idea.

Castles should be protecting your army as much as armies are protecting your castles. Kinda makes sense. If you have 10 castles, all of your armies aren’t going to be in one castle and even time it’s going to be spread out across the 10 and only the army in the losing castle is killed. The way the guide is written 75ish percent of your army is going to defend. With this rule you’d never lose more than 75ish percent in 1 attack

Also, the fact that you attack a castle and not an entire kingdom gives you an advantage over your opponent, that is, he will not be able to protect himself with all his men, but only those currently close enough to the sieged castle to be able to defend it. This means is that if an opponent has many castles and 200 infantry units under his control, he will not defend with 200 infantry, but more like 150 of them. Lord Thane you said you solved the problem what actually happened Though? I didn’t see many BR’s from that test. If there was an explanation of how three phase caped losses and if I understood it and it made sense I would be inclined to adopt it. Saying something was shut down. Because 3 vocal contibuters didn’t like it in its first implemented form is no reason to scratch it off completely.

Perhaps it is part of a strategy, where you select aggressive(fight to the last man, 30 hour retal), normal (losses 66% of normal, 14 hour retal) or Guerrilla (15%(?) of normal, 50%(?) chance retal for 12 hours(?))

Guerilla tactics would help smaller KD's chip away at larger KD's while keeping their armies out. A needed win for the little man, I think. Making this up as I go lol. Let the user decide their determination and losses.

trupheus yeah I think we have a modifier for castles in the building modifiers during the battle calc, and I've seen evidence of that working in battle tests, but mayyyybe that's not getting figured in the casualties for defender. Going to need to look at that.

Granted, I prolly shouldn't have went after such core changes without some discussion. But also, I felt like the state it was/is in is broken for battles. Players 2 decades ago had the time/energy to dedicate themselves to mastering the system as it was - and also technology back then was such that Thardferr could get away with being overly difficult due to it's novelty. Nowadays I see the player base as being too old and tired to be dealing with such high stake high risk micromanagement all the time. At least I feel too old for that, shoot I got a business to run and kids and pets and everything else going on. I'm not setting a alarm for 3am to get up and send my generals out like I did when I was 13.

Idk if any "new" players are really going to fill the ranks, because the game isn't really novel anymore. Theres similar games, with graphics, and mobile apps, and micro transactions and all the other new stuff. I think we have a good 5-10k potential player base of 35-55 year olds that will possibly come for the nostalgia of playing novel 90s/2000s games, and we should think about that in how we develop a modern Thardferr.

So to me that means making the battle system much more forgiving, much less stressful, much less micromanagement.

We used to pass around primitive spreadsheets to help calc battles. We don't need to do that stuff anymore, we can just develop a battle calc right into the system and make it easy for everyone. Why put more stress, nobody has time for that.
