I guess I'll necropost on this thread but...
I believe we have an issue with magic in the game. And it's only marginally related to the shenanigans that truph had pulled. As the only remaining elf in my group (the other two couldn't hack it as furries) I don't even have most of the magic techs done.
There are some issues with balancing the offensive spells, but without a larger portion of players using them the devs only have limited data points on them, which are mainly the truph bombs from what I know. Currently I don't think I will bother going for EQ or GB due to the time investment involved in the techs, then getting insight after that and maybe magical instruments seems to be a very large investment for little relative reward. I don't necessarily think the issue is with magic though, per say. I think it's tech times and MP's.
MP's take away one of the biggest benefits of having an elf in the group, which was casting spells. Now, I know the player base definitely doesn't want to get rid of them because they all have become addicted to their elf free blessings, but perhaps a greater bonus on elf generation of them would better offset the lost gold?
The biggest issue though I believe is the tech times. I feel like you have to choose very early on in the round whether to go caster or war elf, and if you invest the 24 real days (roughly a third of the round) to get all the magic techs, you are so far behind on eco and military that playing catch up would seem damn near impossible.
To help mitigate the above, I though maybe a new production building could help, call it the "Library". When xx amount of pop is in it, it increases research speed by xx% (numbers to be determined at a future date). Definitely could help get through the slog that is some of those longer techs, at the cost of eco (cause your pop is not in mines/mills/whatever).
Anyways, just thought id throw the idea out there.
Edit: Obviously not for this round, but for future rounds.
