Here’s a potentially wild, out-of-the-box idea…
What if all units sent in an attack were queued, allowing multiple kingdoms to coordinate and attack a single target together? All their units would be pooled into a single force, and the battle would take place as one consolidated attack.
Proposed Battle Mechanics:
1) Battle Resolution Timing:
- Attacks are resolved at fixed intervals: 00:00, 06:00, 12:00, and 18:00.
- The defender faces one combined force from all participating attackers.
2) Defensive Protection:
- Defender gets a "position bonus" based on how many kingdoms they are defending against
-- All attackers attack force decreased by 10% with the addition of each Kingdom ("distrust and disorganization")
--- Maybe a cap on the decrease to 50%.
--- No decrease if a kingdom is contributing less than 10% of total attack
- The defender gains protection based on the percentage of units lost in the battle.
- The more units lost, the longer or stronger the protection.
3) Retaliation Mechanic:
- The defender is granted a single retaliatory strike, usable at any time (not limited to the scheduled battle times).
- This retal targets the kingdom that inflicted the most damage or the one that captured the castle.
4) Shared Losses & Rewards:
- Attacking kingdoms share losses and divide land gains proportionally based on damage dealt:
- More damage = more land.
- The highest-damaging kingdom captures the castle, but also risks receiving the retaliation.
Potential risks of this new mechanism:
1) Coordinated Overwhelm (Dogpiling)
- Smaller or less active kingdoms could be overwhelmed by coalitions, especially if large kingdoms coordinate attacks and lump forces together
2) Retaliation Disincentive (Benefit to the Defender)
- If retaliation is limited to just one strike and always targets the "top damager," strong players may avoid taking the castle or dealing the most damage to dodge retaliation.
3) Time-Based Exploits
- Maybe hard for some people to join if living in different time zones
Addition (edit)
Special Case: Simultaneous Mutual Attacks
1) In the event of simultaneous attacks between two kingdoms, e.g.:
- Kingdom (A) is attacked by (1)(2)(3)
- Kingdom (1) is attacked by (A)(B)(C)
- All attacks occur at the same time
Then, (A) and (1) are both automatically treated as defenders:
- (A) defends against (2)(3)
- (1) defends against (B)(C)
- Their mutual attack on each other is negated or deprioritized.
2) In the case where only (A) and (1) are attacking each other (a pure 1v1 mutual attack):
- Both kingdoms are treated either as attackers or defenders, based on a developer-defined global rule.
-- Suggested Options:
-- Both treated as attackers: Pure damage battle with no protection or retals.
-- Both treated as defenders: Loser gains defense bonuses and a retal (might feel more balanced or fair).
3) In the case where it is Kingdom (A) vs Kingdoms (1)(2)
- Kingdom (A) attacking (1)
- Kingdom (1)(2) attacking (A)
- Kingdom A moves to defense against (1)(2)
-- Kingdom A does not attack (only defend)
No idea on how complicated the coding will be... It also breaks some fundamental flavor of Thardferr...
