trupheus you might have missed it, but I kind of explained some about offensive spell potency in another thread. Schools and wizards matter for both sides, yes, but also you as the caster get to roll something like a 300 sided dice as well. A really poor roll can have worthless results, a really good roll can be devastating for the defender.

Still pretty nice hit for a one-time blast. someone should do the math and figure how much resources that hit costs, bet it's glorious lol

Can you explain the rules around offensive spells please? I know they give retals, but murky on the rest of how it works.

-do they break protection when casting? if no - what's the logic behind that and why would it be different than attacking?
-is there a KS limit on casting both up or down?
-is there scaling done to potency when casting on targets higher or lower than your KS? in the above EQ he was less than 50% of my KS - if we were equal how much more potent would it have been?

For the trolls in the forums, I am just asking out of curiosity and not complaining.

Oh, I'm intentionally being facetious.

To answer your question about the expense...

Extrapolating out the rough ratios (because we all know TS can vary greatly) and then bringing each building back up to that ratio to total 2170 buildings, it is in the neighborhood of 37,425 wood, 14,700 iron, and 570,450 gold.

skigglez Keeper added the retaliation thing and I haven't looked at the code for it, but I don't believe offensive spells break protection - someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Theres no KS limit perse (fireball does have a limit, but it's pretty high % of pop that can die limit), but it is much more difficult to hit-up with a than down - as the defenders land and KS are figured into the difficulty, and the difficulty level also effects the potency. A caster doing a fireball on someone same size or smaller can kill more pez per wiz than if they fireball someone that's bigger than them.

The potency is a really interesting formula, since it takes so many things into consideration - including the defenders size, their schools, their wizards, their rested vs unrested wizards. The formula that figures out success is also used in the potency, so if you do have schools and wizards then you can reduce the potency of a offensive spell cast on you.

Rested wiz count for double what a resting wiz counts for.

Then on top of all that, there's the 300 sided dice that also plays a part. If a caster rolls a 300 crit, then even a reasonable defence of schools/wiz won't feel like it dampened the effects much. While a really low roll might make the caster feel a bit cheated.

Overall I think the magic system is pretty well balanced, with a bit of chance thrown in for fun. Definitely makes people think twice about running no magic defense now that the elves are turning into glass cannons.

In that respect, maybe giving offensive spells a retal wasn't such a bad idea after all 😵‍💫

Just feels odd that someone less than 50% your size has the ability to kill 1/3 of your buildings on a low rolled spell when they're so low you can't even attack them normally. Doesn't that enable a few coordinated EQ's to completely zero someone's buildings? Maybe I'm crazy, but that doesn't seem very balanced in my opinion, especially if they can do it under the cover of protection on top of it.

Again, not complaining. Just pointing out what's going to happen now that people are deeper into the spell techs and everyone sees how powerful EQ can be on low KS kingdoms.

Except the kingdom doing it to Haybol wasn’t less than half his KS. Completely different situation, you get the full benefits of attacking. This scenario you don’t, which exposes a serious flaw in the rules around offensive spells in my opinion. All it does is encourage multis to pop up to nuke people way out of their ks range.

DougEfresh I think when it happened to Haybol we discovered the bug that was making the cast success chance opposite of what was intended, so the smaller kingdom was actually getting a buff to cast against the larger one. That was fixed so it should be much more difficult for a small caster to even succeed against a larger one. And that same success chance also affects the potency, so even if a smaller kingdom succeeds against larger, it would have lower effects.
