I lost 13,617,250 gold worth of troops and almost 30 ticks of rebuild time for 15 hours of protection on a 60%ish bottom feed. I lost 60%ish of my troops with practically zero percent chance of retailing.
I don’t feel that quick retreat should negate the bottom feed penalty. This is mostly based on my personal experience of being the one who was smashed.
Quick retreat is now the meta for defense. It’s the only way to effectively have enough troops survive a defense to retail. Even when attacked by a normal-sized opponent, even one a little bigger, but you were still in their 70%, successful defenses still happen. However, I’m sure if you ran the numbers, you would see a lot higher number of failed defenses. This is why quick retreat on defense is the tactic to lean on. It leads to the highest survival rate of troops. On no Strat, I would have killed more of his troops at a much higher percentage of my own troops, but I still lost the BF and only 15 ticks for rebuild. With CLI in place, it’s better to take the higher chance of successful retail than trying to defend an actual attack to get more protection.
Don’t even get me started on the 20 castle hump. It makes finding viable trades difficult. If I can take two right now, I’ll just lose 1 and come out ahead. But if I’m at 18 castles and take two, I get retailed and I’m right back to 18, usually down some land because daddy got a big butt. Now I’m just ranting after a long day. I’ll stop now. 😘
