It’s the reason we switched to using QR. Without it, a much larger kingdom can easily attack and destroy your army. Theoretically, I thought quick retreat would work, where you only field half of your troops and concede the attack to save your army. However, it doesn’t seem to be working that way. Now, the way it saves your army is by preventing you from getting double-tapped, which results in even more losses. Defending or failing an attack is detrimental to a kingdom, and the only thing worse is losing a retail opening yourself again. Taking advantage of those opportunities when they arise are the only rewarding attacks. Everything else is just trading land back and forth and trying to stay ahead on castles, leading to mostly stalemated kingdoms of growth. It results in boredom, as you do the same things every day without much reward until someone makes a mistake.
I understand the argument that with the pre/re in place, the player with the most friends wins. However, CLI removes that factor, so it does that well. As we scale in KS, the effects of protection significantly increase, making larger kingdoms almost untouchable. Sure, if ten kingdoms attack one guy, it will eventually go down, but protection is the key now. If you’re not in it, your kingdom is at great risk. Hopefully, you get to hit someone below you before someone above you catches your army. What’s the fix? I’m not even sure at this point. Maybe it’s because I like to win, and at the moment, it’s not going well for me. But losing battles is expected, just the way war feels now; it’s not fun. The only thing you can regularly do that feels like cooperation between province mates is sending aid to a province. It doesn’t really matter who hit them; they get protection, so you just watch them try to retail and give them aid if they don’t succeed. War used to feel like epic battles, but it doesn’t feel that way anymore.
Also, on a personal level, now that I’m 42, and everything I used to love is getting a reboot or sequel, the dopamine I get from nostalgia has really diminished.
