According to the guide mages are only supposed to be damaged by ranged attacks. If this isn't the case then that needs to be updated in the guide and mages probably need to have their defence buffed a bit

And also that just can't really fly for the premier unit for a race, a dice roll to see if you randomly lose 90% of them hitting someone who had the majority of his army out?

Thecatman looks to be you got screwed over by the Infantry Attack strategy. It was configured to count unit1/unit2 as infantry, so their attack powers got amplified while their defenses were weakened - weakened enough to get zeroed out at range.

I updated that strategy to use unit2/unit3 (eg for elf = swordsman/lancemen), as those are much more appropriate as "infantry" type units across all races. I also refactored the entire strategy's code to make sure it's working more closely to the game guide description (make sure the 2.5x buff is working, and damage reduction to other units, also makes infantry much easier to kill).

Lord Thane Thank you for the quick fix and the info. Lol that also explains another BR from earlier in the round where I used infantry attack and was wondering why so many mages died 😆 I just thought the strat sucked

skigglez that's how Dwarf has always been, and if you think it's easy to keep 50% SB you should try playing a Dwarf and find out lol. In the test round I tried it, ran 50% SB and 50% Runners, thought it was a great idea - nullify long range, hit them in short range with my runners, and mop up what's left in melee... Except I got totally shit on by Orcs, very easily even. Had to give up that strategy hella quick, useless as it is for anything but strategic use. And now as a Gnome, this is why I have a shit ton of Bals to match my Cats. It's a balance, you can't just do 1 thing and expect to be safe from everything, there's always an angle for someone else to break you - even a Dwarf trying to run 50% SB.

I do play dwarf haha. I know it's hard to maintain 50% SB for a full army, my concern is with a small number left defending after an attack. For example - you send 90% at someone and are left with 10% units at home. Of the 10% you have 50% SB - if you have Shield Line strategy enabled does that reduce 100% of ranged damage when you get attacked, regardless of how many units are hitting you? That's where my ridiculous example of 1 SB 1 runner comes from - would they technically reduce the ranged damage from a million catapults hitting you to 0 when defending because 50% of your army is SB? I get it, they don't just attack with only catapults, but if that's the case it exposes a flaw with SB and the SL strategy in my opinion.

skigglez yes as long as they use the strat it doesn't matter how many unit they have in total as long as half of them are SB then 100% of long range is void.

Someone sending 100% ranged at a dwarf would be a fool or a gambler and deserve to lose in that case. Just like the dwarf would be wide open for an Orc to mosey on in for a free win. In the same token, that same Orc would get totally vaporized trying to even look at a Gnome that's jacked for range.

The races have special abilities, strengths and weaknesses. Pitting one races ultimate weakness against another races ultimate ability doesn't mean there's a problem, just means the player doesn't know what they're doing.

Actually I just got hit by a Dwarf trying to run a SB strat against me, a few days ago. Luckily I had spent over a week doing nothing but Bals in anticipation of Jets testing my invincibility.

We managed to kill : 1405 Shieldbearer 668 Hammer wheilder 2208 Axe Man 0 Runner 1162 Light Crossbowman 0 Heavy Crossbowman

But we lost : 348 Catapult 0 Infantry 0 Militia 0 Rider 0 Rock thrower 617 Balista

I haven't done the calcs of the resource cost on that. It does sting though, several days of build time to replace that. But what I gleened from it is my weakness to SB. I'm sure my magnificent long range vaporized 100% of whatever units weren't protected by the SB, those SB saved units then went on to melee and caused all my losses I'm sure. Nothing much I can do about that, except keep pushing Bals ahead of my Cats to make sure I have something left to defend in melee.

skigglez no, it was the units the SB saved. I know they used SB strat, because if they didn't they surely would have been zeroed out in long range. So the units their SB saved were able to hit me back and cause losses.

@Lord Thane A few questions about SBs

Does Shield line strat also reduce the Dwarf's LR to 0? If not, why not since they're hiding behind the shields that protect them?

Is the Melee reduction for both the Dwarf and the opponent? If so, why would the opponents Melee be reduced?

While I agree that it's difficult and probably unreasonable for a Dwarf to run 50% SBs as an entire army, it does feel off to me that a Catapult launching massive amounts of explosive payloads does 0 damage to things like SBs with Shield line or to Skeletons using swarm. It just seems like some small percent, maybe 10% or so should still get through and crush some units.

Nolio no, the Dwarf gets to take their full long range attack, because they can quickly peak around the shield to pull the trigger on their crossbow 🙂

No, only the Dwarf gets melee debuff.

The SB can block 100% because the Dwarves are so good at building high quality shields that they're almost magical - technology that's sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic, etc. For Skeletons, it's magic 😉😆

I can get behind the magic shields tanking the damage, though lets be honest, if 300k worth of Rocks, Arrows, and Boulders are launched at the dwarves, there are bound to be some death from those unlucky few poking their heads out to throw an axe lol
